Residential Building Codes for Safety Glass

Everyone loves having a glass door or a glass window because it looks exceptionally classy on a surface. But, at the same time, it is also pretty dangerous when it gets broken. When a standard glass breaks, it forms long and dangerous shards which can pose multiple risks. This is why it is suggested to go for tempered glasses which are also known as safety glasses, to ensure that there are no significant risks imposed even if the glass breaks down.

Safety glasses are made by heating the sheets of glass to a very high temperature. After the glass has become extremely hot, it is cooled quickly to make tempered glass. If a tempered glass breaks, it crumbles down to form rounded and small pieces which eliminate the probability of someone getting injured due to it.

They can also be repaired like normal building glass repair. There are some of the residential codes which should be followed to ensure that maximum safety prevails in residential areas.

Doors

The International Residential Code says that all the panels and glass inoperable, fixed, sliding, swinging and bifold doors should be constructed by using safety glasses and not the normal ones. No matter what is the size of the doors, safety glasses should be used.

If there is any glass object which comes under the 24-inch arc of the door, it should also be made out of safety glass, if the bottom edge of the object is not beyond 60 inches above the ground level. However, if there are any decorative glasses, it can be considered under the exception.

Windows

If the operable of the fixed window is more than 9 feet square, the top edge is beyond 36 inches above the level of the floor; the bottom edge lies below 18 inches from the level of the floor, then it should be made out of safety glasses. If the conditions are not met, it can be made out of the ordinary glass.

Stairs

According to the IRC, the rails of the stairs should be constructed from the safety glasses. The nonstructural infill panels and structural baluster panels should also be made out of the tempered glasses as well.

If an object is located within 36 inches of the walking area from the stairs, landings or the ramps, it should also be made of safety glasses. It should also be checked that the area of the glass which is exposed should not be more than 60 inches away from the walkway.

Wet Areas

The glass in the wet areas where there is a risk of falls or slips like the bathrooms should be made of tempered glass. Any area near the bathtub should not be made of the regular glass because there is a risk that it might get broken and injure you. If the bottom edge of any glass surface is below 60 inches above the walking or standing surface, it should avoid being made of ordinary glass.

These are some of the rules which are stated by the IRC, and it should be followed by people living in the residential areas as well.

Things to Know About Insulated Glass Windows

All of us want our homes to be efficient. And most of us look for energy efficiency when it comes to our homes. One of the many components that will help you enhance the energy efficiency of your home is the kind of glass used by you.

There is a special kind of glass known as insulated glass that is in trend these days.

What is insulated glass window?

An insulated glass window helps retain the heat within your house. In summers, it will help protect your home from the outside temperature to come in, and in winters it will keep the cold outside.

So basically, an insulated glass will help prevent the transfer of heat into or outside a building. Insulated glass is made by multiple layers of glasses spaced by metals like aluminum, or structural foam.

The space between the layers is filled with noble gases like argon and krypton. They are sometimes also called double-pane or double-glazed glass. With advancements in technology, triple-glazed and quadruple-glazed glasses are also available in the market.

Here are some things you should know about insulated glass.

1. Importance of insulated glass for your home

Insulated glass windows play an important role in keeping your home warmer in winters and more relaxed in summer. This happens because of the air that is filled between the spaces of layers of the glass. The gas that is filled is generally a noble or inert gas. Its density is higher than that of air, and thus it prevents the passing of heat through the glass.

The amount of heat that is allowed to be transmitted through the window is measured through its 'u' value. This number determines the heat transmission through the glass. If the insulation seal of the glass breaks, it can lead to a decrease in the overall efficiency of the window.

2. What should you do if the insulated glass seal fails

Windows are always subjected to extreme weather conditions and environmental factors. It is difficult to say if the insulation seal has broken or not as the glass will continue to look the same. With time, this glass when subjected to humidity and extreme temperature will show haziness and signs of fog deposition.

3. What are the reasons behind a window seal failure?

A window seal can break due to several reasons like repeated expansion and contraction of the sealant over several seasons. The seal can also crack due to expansion and contraction of the window glass panes.

When you clean your window from both the sides and still observe that the fog and haze don't disappear then it is a clear sign that your glass is failing. Only professional glass experts can help you identify the right reasons behind this failure and repairing them.

You should assess your home's windows for any damage and then consider the possible building glass repair for them. If it has been long since you last replaced your windows, then you should think of replacing them altogether.

On Site Spray Painting – The Journey So Far

A can of spray to paint the home interiors and even some parts of the exterior is a handy device found in all the households these days. Although we are quite used to it, it is still a recent invention from the grand historical scale. Painstaking hard work to paint the exteriors and interiors of significant buildings of residential, commercial and the industrial kind, using the brushes and rollers, was not an easy task all until the 19th century.

The spray paint was introduced to the world in 1887 by Joseph blinks. This person was a supervisor in the facilities management arena of a commercial complex. The sense of urgency and the challenges in painting the whole mall, made him think about something innovative. He used a few accessories available in reserve. A nozzle, with a hand pump, and a wand were sufficient for him to do the invention. A suitable container with the pressurized paint became the first ever-introduced spray paint of the world. Thanks to the contributions of the supervisor, Joseph blinks.

Later the technology was used extensively in the car finishing services in the garages. This saved a lot of time to complete the production process quicker and release the cars at a faster rate in the industrial units. Today things are entirely different, though. Gone are the days of the customer reaching the places of the service company? Nowadays you get the servicemen to your doorsteps, just at a push of a button.

With a plethora of options that are available in the same locality where you are residing, send a text expressing your preferences online, you get a chain of calls in a few minutes to provide you quote. They are ready to come and deliver at your doorsteps to fulfill your on site spray painting needs. After inspecting the project, proper quotes are offered.

Experienced technicians evaluate the needs and estimate the project to provide you instant quotes. Meanwhile, you can do the background work to see how suitable is the service company to fulfill your needs, by tracking down their records online. Reviews, ratings, and the comparisons are helpful. After awarding the project, see the work execution and final change to rate the pros.

Finishing is the most attractive element of the On site spray painting process. Unless you are going to use the right equipment that is meant for the finishing process, you cannot get the desired appeal. There are two essential aspects to keep in mind here. The costs of the project and the expectations of the clients must be taken into consideration before choosing any finish. The final lustre and the shine can be evident for long periods. They make use of the specialized tools to get the thin finish that is also a protective layer for the inner coats.

More inputs from the consumer’s side can facilitate the manufacturers to come up with better solutions each time. That is one way to enhance the consumerism, as well as the betterment of the products, too.

Spray painting has become very popular nowadays. Using the LVLP system, which is a device, a coating of plastic, metal or color is sprayed upon the object that is to be painted. But, not every weather is ideally suited for spray painting. If it is too hot, the spray paint dries out even before reaching the surface. This results in an orange peel on the surface. The best time to spray paint is when the temperature in between 18 to 25 degrees. The weather needs to be cooperative when you are planning to spray paint the exterior.

Let us see in details, when is the right time for on-site spray painting.

Painting and Exterior Spraying

It is always not the ideal weather to spray paint the exterior of your building. The best weather conditions are mostly in spring, autumn and summers, this is the time when there is usually no rains. There are fewer fluctuations in temperature from day to the night. This helps in even coating and application of the paint. The paint also gets time to dry and settle on the surface properly. The spraying projects also get completed quickly as the days are longer.

Why is it not Advisable to Spray Paint During Winters

It becomes challenging to spray paint during the winters as the paint doesn't stick to the surfaces. The surfaces become frosty due to which the spray paints don't get properly cured. Due to cold weather conditions, the paint also thickens and it becomes more difficult to apply an even coating. The spray gun gets clogged. The color doesn't spread properly and is not uniform. You will probably not want one side of your wall loaded with colors, and another side to be faded. If the damp seeps into the uncured paint, it can result in stain or corrosion.

Tips to Spray Paint Smoothly

1. Prepare the Surface

This process takes the longest and is the essential one. Most of the people get excited and tend to skip this process. Before you start giving the first coat, you need to prepare the surface. Go for sanding, washing, peeling to remove any dust or debris on the surface. Also, dry the surface before painting it. The paint should also be compatible with the surface.

2. First Coat

Don't over-spray or under-spray. The spray nozzle should be held 25 to 30 centimetres from the surface and the paint should be slowly spread from a side to another. You can also apply a primer 24 hours prior to applying the first coat.

3. Recoating

You need to wait for 20 mins before applying the second coat. If you rush into it, you might end up seeing wrinkles.

4. Nozzle Should be Cleaned

The nozzles become clogged after application of the first coat. So, make sure you clean them before you apply the second coat.

If you follow the steps carefully, you will surely take a pride in showing your spray painted building. No matter if it is plastic or metal spray paint, these rules are applicable to both.
